May Flowering Plants: Our Favourites

May is the month where we see so much change in the garden. The spring flowering bulbs are coming to an end and the slightly warmer weather and sunnier days bring plants that are bursting with colour. The summer-flowering perennials start to make an appearance providing much needed vibrancy and interest to outdoor spaces. See below our favourite May flowering plants.

Rhododendron 'Kabarett'

Rhododendron’s are so beautiful when they are out in full bloom. This variation ‘Kabarett’ is stunning with large purple flowers that have dark throats.

Potentilla fruticosa 'Tangerine'

Potentilla are perfect shrubs for filling in fronts of borders or for adding into rock gardens. The flowers add vibrancy to gardens from May to the end of summer. Variation pictured is Potentilla fruticosa ‘Tangerine’

Syringa vulgaris ‘Madame Lemoine’

Syringa (Lilac)

Syringa is a bushy shrub with large heart-shaped leaves and fragrant flowers. This shrub would look beautiful in any garden and will provide colour in late spring and throughout summer. Variation pictured is Syringa vulgaris ‘Madame Lemoine’.

Tiarella (Foam Flower)

The leaves on Tiarella form a beautiful carpet to shady borders from spring to the end of summer. Around May time, thin stems of small star-shaped flowers begin to bloom. This variation ‘Spring Symphony’ has pretty little white flowers that appear from pink buds.

Geum

Geums are clump forming perennials with wrinkled green leaves and beautiful colourful flowers sit above tall slender stems from late spring. This perennial is a great addition to cottage gardens and make perfect cut flowers. Variation pictured is Geum ‘Tequila Sunrise’ (Cocktail Collection).

Phlox 'Candy Stripe'

Phlox

Phlox is the perfect perennial for ground cover. This variation is called Phlox subulata ‘Candy Stripe’ and it will provide vibrant colour in the garden in Spring.
